Away Electives

Please see the instructions below if you are planning to apply for an away rotation. 

The away rotation application process is controlled by the other school.  You should research the school’s requirements, application dates, etc. by going to the school’s visiting student website. A good place to start is https://services.aamc.org/eec/students Links to an external site..

Some schools have their own application forms and others use VSAS Links to an external site. (centralized system). If you need VSAS authorization, please email the Registrar’s Office. If a VSAS school requires a transcript, we will upload this for you once your application has been submitted.

  • A number of away applications ask us for OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens training date. While you have had educational sessions in various courses, the best thing for us is the AME: Infection Prevention--UPHS training found in Knowledge Link.  If you are applying for an away rotation, please complete this on-line module.
  • If a school requires BLS certification, you can sign-up for a session via Knowledge Link or an outside organization such as the American Heart Association. A fee (approximately $70) will apply.
  • School requirements vary with up-to-date immunization requirements.  If you have not had TB testing done in the last few months, please contact Student Health to schedule appointments.  Please update OASIS checklists when you are all set.
  • A few schools require N-95 fit testing documentation. If you have recently been fit tested by the hospital, you should have received an email with the size and type of the respirator (Subject: Respirator Evaluation: Fit Testing Completed). If you need an updated fit test, use this link to complete the questionnaire and schedule an appointment (you must be behind Penn Medicine’s firewall to access the link):  https://uphsnet.uphs.upenn.edu/RespiratorEval. You’ll need to complete “UPHS Respirator Fit Testing” in Knowledge Link before your test.
  • Some schools require a background check completed within a year of the rotation date. If you need this, please email PSOMRegistrar@pennmedicine.upenn.edu so we can re-authorize you via the Certiphi system. A fee (approximately $35) will apply.

Once you are accepted for an away rotation, you need to register via an Arranged Activity form at: https://www.med.upenn.edu/apps/arranged-activities.  Once the form has been submitted, please upload your acceptance notification – click the View/Upload Documents > choose ‘away acceptance’ from the document type drop down box. Documentation is needed before you begin the rotation in order for us to cover you for professional liability insurance.
