In 2020, Penn’s Provost designated Civic Engagement as our Academic Theme, recognizing the importance of this idea as a pilar of the University’s identity.

In the original announcement, Penn leaders commented that “Education for democratic citizenship is perhaps the most significant purpose of American universities. It is key to developing, maintaining, and sustaining a culture of democracy, which is essential for democratic institutions, laws, and elections. In a democratic society, higher education must educate not only able, but also ethical, empathetic, engaged, effective citizens."

This commitment has been in Penn’s DNA from the beginning. We were founded by Benjamin Franklin with a vision of a non-sectarian school to educate the leaders of a growing city, with a focus on practical impact on contemporary life. As Franklin himself wrote in 1749, envisioning the institution that would become the University of Pennsylvania, a goal would be developing in students ‘an Inclination join’d with an Ability to serve Mankind, one’s Country, Friends and Family; which Ability… should indeed be the great Aim and End of all Learning.’”

During New Student Orientation, the commitment to Civic Engagement will emphasized in programs including tours to Philadelphia neighborhoods; opportunities in the College Houses to engage with the larger community; and a special panel and small group discussion with Penn students who have found specific ways to contribute to civic engagement.
